Retriever Rescue

Many people contact us through our website when having the intention to buy a retriever.

Depending on what are the goals of the future dog owner, there is a possibility solution which can sometimes be a good solution.

When someone would like to have a family pet – without planning to work with him, to run him on comeptitions, to go hunting, neither to show him - and their financial background doesn’t make it possible to buy a puppy from a reliable kennel where there is a good chance to buy a healthy retriever which is also having the character a retriever should have, we advise to rather adopt than to buy a cheap puppy from untrusted "puppy mills".

To adopt a retriever that has been thrown out, gotten tired of, abandoned by its previous ’owner’.

A dog is for life and often people realize too late that a dog is a living being and not a stuffed toy on the shelf, that there are responsibilities, that dogs need affection, love and rules – that is repaid a hundred times more by love and loyalty –, and are rather passed on by the owners; in worse cases they are left on streets or taken to a pound.

This is the terrible truth. Bringing up a puppy is hard work, demands a lot of patience, love, constistency and yes despite all, there are still damages in our gardens and homes. If we are not cautious, and have not trained otherwise puppies/dogs could jump on us, dirtying and ruining clothes.

Below you can read about the goals of the Retriever Rescue Association, and about how is it possible to adopt a retriever from them:

Today with a huge selection of breeds available, the retriever is most probably the one breed that in one aspect emerges above all: its multi-purpose. Excellent gundog, intelligent and loyal partner with its drive to always wanting to meet expectations, nice character and suppleness is what makes both the labrador and the golden retriever great family pets.

One often hears of retrievers who guide the blind in everyday life, search and rescue people after natual disasters, loyally helping the handicapped or simply a true family member growing up with our children, therefore teaching them the meaning of responsibility and trust.

On account of the above, the types of living conditions we have to rescue dogs from are unbelievable and inconceivable. The Association was founded in 2009, but thanks to a coordinated and precise teamwork, we have been rescuing dogs since 2006. Many retrievers are thrown out, their lives endangered by the busy roads. More than that end up in shelters and pounds, however the ever growing population of stray and homeless dogs results in a continuous lack of space and this exceptional breed is alsothreathened to be euthanized.

The Retriever Rescue Association is another chance for these unfortunate retrievers for a new, happier life. The Association is aware of 3-400 distressed retrievers per year and only about a half of them can fall under our full care. The other half has a chance as well on our website, where the Association acts as a mediator in the adoption process.

When a retiever is under the Association’s care, the first step – after the mandatory 14 days waiting period – is vaccination, microchipping and neutering, preparing the dogs for adoption.

Often this basic veterinary care is insufficient. Some of our dogs require surgery on superficial and deep injuries, and occassionally bone corrections. The hardest mission is treating the mental wounds.

A journey full of difficulties, along with gratitude is the temporary hosts’ task. The rescued dog is taken to the host’s own home, to his/her family and possibly dogs as well. This is when physical and mental rehabilition happens, so we can find good and responsible owners as soon as possible.

The host also needs to be familiar with the dog’s temperament and habits, making it easier to pair them with potential owners, taking into account what both parties need – trying to avoid giving a hyperactive dog to a retired elderly couple, or a lazy dog, sleeping on the couch all day to an athletic person –, avoiding a dog in need of quiet and rest fitting in a loud family with many children.
